Oct. 10, 2009

Keynote: Dr. Joyce Hinkson, CDE

Session 1: Screencasting for the Masses, Scott Lewis, Minarets HS

"Screencasts are useful for demonstrating and teaching; the movie takes the place of potentially unclear written explanations or to show others how a given task is accomplished."

  • Screentoaster.com
  • Youtube.com - create your own channel and it may not be blocked at your school site, or put on a wiki and it may not be blocked
  • Google Videos
  • Vimeo.com - Vimeo is a respectful community of creative people who are passionate about sharing the videos they make.
  • Keepvid.com - Download, or Convert, or Play Streaming Videos
  • at a Smartboard, click on the video camera and start recording your lesson
  • One could record a demonstration of something by recording it with a document camera
  • You could put a video in your powerpoint
  • Download Powerpoint Producer- this can help you produce something like Infomercials- with video on one side of the screen and powerpoint on the other side of the screen, then they can be synched [can't seem to find this]

Session 2: Free Resources from the CDE, Joyce Hinkson, Calif Dept of Ed

Session 3: Using the iPod Touch in the Classroom, Brad Robb, El Diamante HS

"The iPod Touch is a low cost, highly engaging piece of technology that makes learning fun. Come see how I use them, as well as join in a discussion over the possibilities for your classroom."

Mr. Robb has students who work independently in his math classroom learning their math on iPod Touches or computers, viewing videos. He also direct teaches. He lets students choose which way they would rather learn math.

Tooble.tv- video downloading, download any video from YouTube, convert it to play on your iphone, iPod or on your computer

Students and parents sign a permission slip at the beginning of the school year stating whether or not they want to participate in the iPod Touch program, realizing that the iPod Touch costs about $250 and students are responsible for giving it back at the end of the period in the same condition it was in when they picked it up at the beginning of the period

Mr. Robb's World - check in at Mr. Robb's Website to see how the IPod Touch Experiment is coming along, 2009 - 2010 is the first year he has used iPod Touches in the classroom

Session 4: Going Paperless in the Math Classroom,  Kevin Scritchfield, Sierra HS

"Using iPod Touches, Google Docs, Google Sites, UStream, other websites, and even publisher's tools to take your students into a more interactive learning environment that is closer to  "their world"! Includes tools for repetition for students as well as taking care of absentees!"

kscritch@sierra.k12.ca.us

These ideas work really well for students who are absent making up the work.

Mr. Scritchfield developed a Google Webpage for his Precalculus Class- this is his first year to do this but he feels it is very successful so far.

Mr. Scritchfield recommends Google Docs, Google Calendars, UStream, MathXL, Clickers, YouTube, SnapGrades, IGoogle, IPhone/ IPod Touch, Keynote/ PowerPoints, Google Sites. He videotapes his lectures and posts them for absent students. Take a look at his website!

He admitted that he should have named his presentation "Going Paperless in the Classroom", as many of his ideas can be used in any discipline!

Closing Keynote: “Learning in the Clouds” Jonny Chambers
