Orientation

What do you want to share about your orientation?

I uploaded my orientation packet in the files section. What I do is this: I give an overview of my library -- explaining the basic policies and procedures of the library. This includes, OPAC (how to find a book), overdues, types of materials that are available for checkout, AUP, and most importantly how to use an encyclopedia. Most students coming from elementary do not know how to use an encyclopedia or any other reference work. After my lengthy and entertaining introduction, I split up the student into 7 groups at 7 different tables. Each group is required to complete the page that corresponds to its table number. Then after about 10 to 15 minutes (I vary it depending on the ability of the students), they rotate to the next table. This takes about 3 full days (average period length being 55 minutes).

For table 3, parts of the questions require the students to leave their seats and go to the shelves to answer a question.

“Table” 7 is actually up and about the library, looking for books – a mini scavenger hunt if you will.

After each group of students has had a chance at each station, I then review the entire packet with them. (I grade the packet and give the results to the classroom teacher). Some would say that a three-day orientation is too much time -- if so it can be modified to a shorter period of time. However, those students and teachers who go through the entire orientation are more successful library users throughout the rest of the school year.

(Please note I originally posted an earlier draft of this post under Teacher Ideas). -- Troy My orientation packet may be found in the files section with the file name "Orientation-07-6a.doc"
