Advocacy Ideas

Have you figured out a way to get more money for your library? How about creating a higher profile? List those wonderful ideas here.

1. One thing that I do is create a monthly newsletter. It is a single page that I create with Microsoft Publisher. It details what is going on in the library, it includes a list of a few new books, and so on. I then put it in the mailboxes for all the teachers and students. In particular, my admin have noted how much they appreciate knowing what is going on in my building. Our Title 1 clerk now pulls an article from my newsletter to use in her quarterly newsletter. (Tom Nixon, Tehipite)

2.  I always create an "Activity Report" for my principal once or twice a year. I include anything and everything I've done related to the library during that period of time. I include spreadsheets on monies raised and spent, lessons taught, books purchased, special events, collection statistics and pictures. Our school sites need to know how active our libraries are! (Jan Rottner, Duncan)

3. I write letters to people of influence. Mr. Hanson, Mike Villines, the Board members, the Fresno Bee editorial section. There are so few of us and if we don't speak up for ourselves, no one else will.  (Jan Rottner, Duncan)
